The Hunger Portfolio is a Lions District 201v5 initiative that brings Lions clubs and the community together to make a difference by achieving our objective of “Relieving the Hunger”. This fits in with our goal of “where there’s a need, there’s a Lion” which concentrates on, and commits us as Lions, to supporting those who are going without the basic element of food in our communities.
We are engaged in a couple of major projects under the hunger banner. The first is our participation in breakfast clubs.
Over the past 12 months, and with the support of clubs within our District, we have been able to engage with the conduct of Breakfast Clubs in schools across the District and have also assisted other Districts to get their own projects started.
This project focuses on providing breakfast to school children who might otherwise go without. The Breakfast Clubs are conducted in concert with the Foodbank Organisation and is approved by the State Government. In the past 12 months, we have provided breakfasts for hundreds of primary school kiddies.
Many of the Clubs in our District are already looking out for people in our community in this way. More and more Clubs in the District are engaging and helping to feed kids in schools at breakfast; we also have our Lions volunteering at food caravans in many areas. With all of this going on, we are still looking for more clubs to engage with this important project so we can help more kiddies in need.
In addition to the Breakfast Clubs, we also collect foodstuffs for distribution to families in need. From time to time, we will conduct these food collections and ensure that the food collected goes to those in need.
